OpenClaw vs Claude Code Channels: Which Should You Use in 2026?

Side-by-side: OpenClaw and Anthropic's Claude Code Channels plugin. Different layers — here's which to pick for business AI agents vs developer DMs.

What Each One Is

**Claude Code Channels** is an official Anthropic plugin (released 2026) that adds messaging-channel support to Claude Code, Anthropic's developer CLI. You install it with `claude --channels plugin:telegram@claude-plugins-official`, pair it to a Telegram, Discord, or iMessage account, and your existing Claude Code session becomes reachable from a DM. It requires Claude Code v2.1.80 or later, a Pro or Max subscription, and a claude.ai login (API key auth is not supported).

**OpenClaw** is a hosted marketplace and deployment platform. You browse a catalog of 32 pre-built business skills (Sales Call Closer, Deep Research Agent, Legal Contract Reviewer, etc.), purchase the one you need, pick Telegram/Discord/WhatsApp as your channel, and start messaging in under 2 minutes. No CLI install, no developer prerequisites, no subscription — skills are one-time purchases.

One is a developer plugin; the other is a productized marketplace. They overlap on "Claude on Telegram" but solve different jobs.

Setup Friction Compared

Claude Code Channels (~10 min for a developer, longer for a non-dev):

  1. Install Claude Code if not already (`brew install claude-code` or equivalent)
  2. Upgrade to v2.1.80+
  3. Confirm a Pro or Max subscription on claude.ai
  4. Log in with `claude login` (browser flow)
  5. Install the channels plugin
  6. Create a Telegram bot with @BotFather and copy the token
  7. Pair with `claude channels pair telegram`
  8. Lock down access scopes

OpenClaw (~2 min for anyone):

  1. Buy a skill on the marketplace
  2. Click "Deploy to Telegram"
  3. Click the generated chat link
  4. Send your first message

The difference matters if the person using the agent isn't a developer.

What You Get on the Other End

With **Channels**, the entity at the other end of your Telegram DM is *your* Claude Code session. It has access to your codebase, your local file system (within the sandbox you configured), and any MCP servers Claude Code is connected to. It is essentially a remote handle for your dev workstation.

With **OpenClaw**, the entity at the other end is a pre-built specialist with a defined methodology, persistent business memory, and access only to the data sources the skill is wired to (your CRM, your research sources, your Stripe — whatever you configured). It does not have your codebase or your shell.

If you need to ship code from your phone: Channels. If you need a Sales Closer specialist that remembers your deal pipeline: OpenClaw.

Model & Persistence

**Channels** uses whichever Claude model your Claude Code is configured to use — Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, or Haiku 4.5. Memory is whatever Claude Code's session persistence gives you, which is typically scoped to a single working directory or session.

**OpenClaw** lets you pick the model per skill — Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini — and ships with persistent memory designed for long-horizon business contexts. Your Sales Call Closer remembers your product positioning, your competitor talking points, and your deal stage definitions across months. This is the core differentiator for business skills: state survives well beyond a single session.

For a quick "can my coding assistant be in my DMs" need, Channels is enough. For a multi-month "my AI Closer learns my market over time" need, OpenClaw's persistence model fits.

Pricing

**Channels** is free with a Claude Pro ($20/mo) or Max ($100/mo or $200/mo) subscription. There is no per-skill cost because Channels is just routing your existing Claude session. The Anthropic Agent SDK credit (separate monthly budget for headless Claude agents) starts June 15, 2026.

**OpenClaw** is one-time pricing. Individual skills from $7.99. Course bundles from $49.99 (Essentials, 3 skills + ebook + cert) to $199.99 (Mastery, all 32 skills + ebook + cert). No monthly subscription on top.

Monthly TCO comparison for a team of 5 using AI agents daily:

  • Channels: 5 × $100/mo Pro = $500/mo + claude.ai usage
  • OpenClaw: ~$200 one-time skill purchases + your existing AI provider costs (Claude API or pre-paid usage)

Different budget shapes for different teams.

Which Should You Pick?

Quick decision tree:

  • **You are a developer who wants your Claude Code session in your phone DMs** → Channels.
  • **You want a productized specialist (sales, research, ops) without learning Claude Code** → OpenClaw.
  • **You need WhatsApp support** → OpenClaw. Channels supports Telegram, Discord, and iMessage but not WhatsApp.
  • **You need multi-model flexibility (Claude + ChatGPT + Gemini)** → OpenClaw, since Channels is Claude-only.
  • **You want persistent business memory across months** → OpenClaw.
  • **You want to roll out AI to non-developer teammates** → OpenClaw, because setup is one click.
  • **You want both** → Run Channels for your dev workflow and OpenClaw skills for your team. They coexist cleanly because they live in different Telegram contacts.

The right framing: Channels extends *your* Claude Code session into a chat app. OpenClaw deploys *pre-built specialists* to your chat app. Different jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use OpenClaw with Claude?+

Yes. Claude is one of three supported model providers on OpenClaw, alongside ChatGPT and Gemini. You can pick Claude Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, or Haiku 4.5 per skill. OpenClaw uses the Claude Agent SDK (renamed from Claude Code SDK in 2026) under the hood for headless agent execution.

Is Claude Code Channels free?+

Free with a Claude Pro or Max subscription ($20/mo, $100/mo, or $200/mo). It does not work with API-key-only setups — you must log in with claude.ai. Claude Code itself must be v2.1.80 or later.

Does Claude Code Channels support WhatsApp?+

No. As of June 2026, Channels supports Telegram, Discord, and iMessage. WhatsApp is not supported, partly because Meta banned general-purpose AI assistants from the WhatsApp Business API in October 2025. OpenClaw deploys to WhatsApp through business-trained skills, which are still permitted under the policy.

Can I run Claude Code Channels and OpenClaw at the same time?+

Yes. They appear as separate Telegram contacts (or Discord bots) and don't conflict. Many engineers run Channels for personal dev work and OpenClaw skills for team-facing specialists.

Do OpenClaw skills require Claude Code installed?+

No. OpenClaw is fully hosted. There is nothing to install on your machine — skills are deployed to your Telegram/Discord/WhatsApp from the OpenClaw dashboard. The Mastery Course teaches you the underlying Claude Code / Claude Agent SDK concepts, but using a deployed skill requires none of that.
